TURNING A FEDERAL HOUSE INTO A FAMILY HOME

Tucked in the heart of Stonington Borough, the living spaces of this otherwise charming Federal home were closed off from one another, and the poor circulation between rooms didn’t reflect the way modern families now live.

Our motif for the renovation thus focused on creating openings that transformed the back-of-house spaces into more functional living spaces and improved the flow throughout the entire first floor. We removed the wall between the dining room and the kitchen to connect the rooms and reconfigured the kitchen layout to improve circulation within and around the cooking and entertainment spaces. This new layout also took advantage of the natural light and view from the patio doors, creating an airy, light-filled kitchen perfect for hosting both indoors and out.

By borrowing space from the existing oversized utility room, we eliminated any dead ends in the first-floor circulation and designed a fanciful powder room for guests that connects from the living room to a laundry alcove and then back to the kitchen. Outside the powder room, we added a custom mudroom cabinet where the family and their guests can hang up their coats before following the family dog into the kitchen.
